About the Organisation

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is a statutory public body established on 12 October 1993 under the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993.

It is mandated to protect and promote human rights and actively works towards human rights awareness, literacy, and policy engagement across India.



About the Programme

The NHRC Summer Internship Programme (SIP) 2026 is a flagship initiative aimed at sensitising students about human rights issues through academic, field-based, and research-oriented exposure.

📆 Duration: 1st June – 25th June 2026 (25 Days)

The programme has been conducted regularly since:

  • 1998 (Summer Internship)
  • 2000 (Winter Internship)

Programme Structure

The internship includes 55–60 intensive sessions covering various human rights issues, including:

  • Classroom lectures by experts
  • Interaction with NHRC Chairperson & Members
  • Research project work
  • Book review assignment
  • Film screenings & discussions

📍 Field Visits include:

  • Police Stations
  • Jails
  • NGOs
  • Parliament
  • National Commissions (NCW, NCSC, NCPCR, etc.)
  • National Legal Services Authority
  • National Green Tribunal
  • Supreme Court of India

Eligibility

Applicants must fall under one of the following categories:

  • Law students:

    • Completed 1st year of 3-year LL.B. (now in 2nd/3rd year)
    • Completed 3 years/Sem VI of 5-year course (now in 4th/5th year)
  • Students from other disciplines (preference to final year):

    • Human Rights (PG Diploma/MA)
    • Political Science
    • Sociology
    • Social Work (MSW)
    • Criminology
    • Public Administration
    • Economics, Commerce, History
    • Anthropology, Mass Communication, IR, etc.

Stipend & Benefits

💰 ₹12,000 stipend

🚆 Travel Allowance:

  • Second-class train fare (for outstation candidates)

🏆 Additional Awards:

  • ₹15,000 / ₹10,000 / ₹5,000 for top 3 research projects
  • Book prizes for top performers (Book Review & Declamation)

📜 Certificate awarded based on:

  • Attendance & discipline
  • Project submission
  • Participation
