The Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy has invited applications for the position of Research Fellow at Vidhi Bengal, its newly established state office in Kolkata. The position offers young legal professionals an opportunity to work closely with the Government of West Bengal on legislative and policy initiatives while also undertaking independent legal and public policy research.

As one of the founding members of Vidhi Bengal, the selected Research Fellow will play a key role in building the office's practice from its inception while working alongside the Lead of Vidhi Bengal on legislative drafting, policy development, and legal research.

About the Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy

The Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy (Vidhi) is an independent legal think tank dedicated to improving laws and governance through evidence-based legal research. The organisation works with Ministries of the Government of India, State Governments, and public institutions by providing research, legislative drafting, and policy support.

Vidhi also undertakes independent legal research on issues of national importance and is committed to promoting better governance through legal reform.

About Vidhi Bengal

Vidhi Bengal is the newest state office of the Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy and is scheduled to commence operations in August 2026. The office will collaborate closely with the Government of West Bengal on legislation and policy matters while producing independent legal research on issues affecting the State.

About the Opportunity

Vidhi is inviting applications for one Research Fellow for its Kolkata office.

The selected candidate will work directly with the Lead of Vidhi Bengal and contribute to legislative drafting, public policy research, stakeholder engagement, and legal reform initiatives.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

• Possess an undergraduate degree in Law.
• Have 0–2 years of relevant work experience in public policy, litigation, or law firms.
• Candidates with relevant internship experience are also encouraged to apply.
• Possess excellent legal research and drafting skills.
• Have strong communication and presentation abilities.
• Be organised, detail-oriented, and capable of meeting deadlines.

Roles and Responsibilities

The selected Research Fellow will:

• Draft primary and subordinate legislation on subjects within the State's legislative competence.
• Attend and present at meetings, consultations, and briefings with government officials and stakeholders.
• Prepare high-quality research reports, policy briefs, position papers, and research notes.
• Write articles, blogs, and opinion pieces.
• Assist in producing podcasts and videos for wider dissemination of research.
• Contribute to the establishment and growth of Vidhi Bengal.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates who possess:

• A Master's degree in Law or Public Policy.
• Experience working with government officials or civil society organisations.
• A record of publications in journals, blogs, or newspapers.
• Familiarity with graphic design.
• Fluency in spoken and written Bengali.

Salary

Remuneration will be competitive and based on the candidate's experience and Vidhi's existing compensation structure.
