NALSAR Invites Applications for Criminal Justice Student Fellowship 2026–27; ₹60,000 Stipend

NALSAR University of Law has invited applications for the Criminal Justice Student Fellowship 2026–2027 at The Square Circle Clinic, offering law students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in criminal justice litigation, research, mitigation, and communications. The 12-month fellowship provides selected Fellows with practical exposure to defence-oriented criminal justice work while working alongside experienced professionals on issues relating to legal aid, death penalty litigation, mental health, and human rights.

The fellowship offers a stipend of ₹60,000 upon successful completion and is open to eligible law students from integrated five-year and three-year LL.B. programmes.

About The Square Circle Clinic

The Square Circle Clinic, established at NALSAR University of Law in April 2025, is a leading criminal justice and human rights initiative founded by the team that formerly led Project 39A.

The Clinic operates from Delhi, Pune, Nagpur, and Hyderabad, providing pro bono legal representation to death row and undertrial prisoners while conducting research on criminal justice, mental health, forensic science, and legal aid.

About the Fellowship

The Criminal Justice Student Fellowship 2026–2027 is a 12-month intensive programme that enables selected Fellows to work closely with the Clinic's:

  • Litigation Team
  • Mitigation Team
  • Research Team
  • Communications Team

Apart from assisting these teams, Fellows will undertake independent research projects and contribute to strategic discussions on important criminal justice issues under expert supervision.

Eligibility

Applications are invited from:

  • Students in the III, IV or V year of a five-year integrated B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) programme during the academic year 2026–2027.
  • Students in the II or III year of a three-year LL.B. programme during the academic year 2026–2027.

Roles and Responsibilities

Selected Fellows will:

  • Assist the Clinic's litigation, mitigation, research, and communications teams.
  • Conduct legal and policy research on criminal justice issues.
  • Contribute to strategic legal initiatives.
  • Undertake independent research under faculty guidance.
  • Gain practical exposure to the functioning of a defence-oriented criminal justice organisation.

Stipend

Selected Fellows will receive:

₹60,000 upon successful completion of the Fellowship.
