The Ministry of Education, Government of India, has officially invited nominations for the post of Vice-Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC). The UGC plays a vital role in shaping higher education policy and maintaining academic standards across the country. The appointment will be made by the Central Government under the provisions of Section 5 of the UGC Act, 1956.
👤 Eligibility Criteria
Only eminent individuals with substantial experience in academics, governance, or professional management—commensurate with the prestige of the post—are eligible. The preferred age limit is below 62 years, and importantly, self-nominations will not be accepted. Nominations must be submitted by peers.
📜 Tenure and Role
According to Clause (b) of sub-section (1) of Section 6 of the UGC Act, 1956, the Vice-Chairman will hold office for three years or until the age of 65, whichever is earlier. In the absence of the Chairman, the Vice-Chairman will also officiate as Chairman of the UGC.
