Pt. Kanhaiya Lal Misra 2nd National Moot Court Competition 2026: Check Eligibility, Registration, Memorial Rules, Prizes and Important Dates

Shambhunath Institute of Law is organising the Pt. Kanhaiya Lal Misra 2nd National Moot Court Competition, 2026 under the auspices of the Pt. Kanhaiya Lal Misra Moot Court Chair. The competition will be held on October 24 and 25, 2026. The event will be conducted in English, with participants competing through preliminary rounds followed by the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.

Who Can Participate?

The competition is open to regular students enrolled in a five-year integrated undergraduate law programme or a three-year graduate law programme.

Each team must consist of three members — two speakers and one researcher. The speakers and researcher have to be identified by the team, and any change in these roles requires an application to the Organising Committee.

Only one team from a particular Law College, University, Institute or School will ordinarily be registered. However, cross participation is permitted, allowing students from two different institutions to form a team.

Registration and Fee

The last date for online registration is October 2, 2026, at 11:59 PM IST.

The registration fee is ₹3,500 per team. Participants are encouraged to complete registration at the earliest.

After payment, teams must upload the transaction receipt with the registration form. Registered teams will subsequently receive a Team Code through email.

The Team Code must be used in all future correspondence. Importantly, teams are prohibited from mentioning or displaying their college/university/institution name or logo in communications or memorials submitted for the competition. Violation can lead to penalties or disqualification.

Documents Required

After completing online registration, teams must email the following documents to mcs@silalld.in by October 2, 2026:

• Scanned copy of Aadhaar Card
• Scanned copy of Approval Form
• Printout of Payment Receipt

Memorial Submission

Every team must prepare two memorials, one for the petitioner and one for the respondent.

The soft copies must be submitted by October 17, 2026, at 11:59 PM IST to memorials.nmc26@gmail.com. The memorials must be in PDF format and named using the Team Code.

Teams must also submit four hard copies at the Registration Desk before the Preliminary Round on October 24 — two petitioner memorials and two respondent memorials.

The hard copies and soft copies must contain identical content; any discrepancy may result in disqualification.

Memorial Format

The memorial must not exceed 40 pages, excluding the cover page.

The Petitioner cover page must be blue, while the Respondent cover page must be red.

The memorial must be printed on A4-size pages, one side only, and spiral bound.

The main text must use Times New Roman, 12-point font, 1.5-line spacing and one-inch margins. Footnotes must use Times New Roman, 10-point font with single spacing. Citations must follow the Bluebook, 21st Edition.

The memorial must include the cover page, table of contents, list of abbreviations, index of authorities, statement of jurisdiction, statement of facts, issues, summary of arguments, arguments advanced and prayer.

The Statement of Facts is limited to two pages, Summary of Arguments to three pages, Arguments Advanced to 25 pages, and Prayer to one page.

Late submission of memorials will attract a penalty of ½ mark per hour per side for both soft-copy and hard-copy submissions.

Researcher's Test

The Researcher's Test will be conducted on October 24, 2026.

It will consist of multiple-choice questions based on the moot proposition and relevant legal provisions. Only the designated researcher of each team can participate.

The test will be conducted only once, and failure to appear will result in disqualification from the Researcher's Test.

Oral Rounds and Time Limits

The competition will consist of two Preliminary Rounds, Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and the Final Round.

In the Preliminary Rounds, each team will argue once for the Petitioner and once for the Respondent. Each team will receive 20 minutes for oral pleadings. One speaker must argue for at least 8 minutes and not more than 12 minutes, with 2 minutes reserved for rebuttal/sur-rebuttal.

The top eight teams based on the preliminary-stage scores will qualify for the Quarter-Finals.

The Quarter-Final will provide 20 minutes per team, while the Semi-Final will provide 30 minutes. In the Semi-Final, each speaker must argue for a minimum of 12 and maximum of 16 minutes, with at least five minutes reserved for rebuttal/sur-rebuttal.

The Final Round will provide each team with 45 minutes. One speaker must argue for a minimum of 18 and maximum of 24 minutes, with at least five minutes reserved for rebuttal/sur-rebuttal.

Evaluation Criteria

Oral arguments will be evaluated on factors including presentation of facts, application of legal principles, depth of research, originality, articulation of issues, response to questions, use of authorities and precedents, and court etiquette.

Plagiarism and scouting are strictly prohibited. Teams or members found engaging in such practices will be disqualified, with the Organising Committee's decision being final.

Prizes and Awards

The competition offers the following prizes:

🏆 Winner Team: ₹50,000 + Trophy

🥈 Runner-Up Team: ₹35,000 + Trophy

🔎 Best Researcher: ₹15,000 + Trophy

🎙️ Best Speaker: ₹15,000 + Trophy

📚 Best Memorial: ₹15,000 + Trophy

Certificates will be provided to all participants.

The Best Researcher will be selected on the basis of the Researcher's Test, while the Best Speaker will be determined from the preliminary-round performance. The Best Memorial will be awarded based on the combined scores of the petitioner and respondent memorials.

Accommodation and Hospitality

Registered teams opting for accommodation and meals will be provided these facilities within the college premises from the evening of October 23 to October 25, 2026.

Teams staying beyond this period will have to pay additional charges. Participants must follow the host institution's disciplinary rules during their stay.

The organisers have clarified that no Travelling Allowance or Dearness Allowance (TA/DA) will be provided.
