📚 New Career-Ready Curriculum Aligned with NEP 2020

Mumbai, June 8, 2025:
Starting from the academic session 2025–26, Mumbai University (MU) is set to introduce skill-integrated undergraduate (UG) programs aimed at enhancing employment opportunities for students. The initiative is part of a larger move toward implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes vocational training and practical learning alongside academic studies.

🎯 Objective: Education with Employability

The new UG curriculum will be designed to bridge the gap between academic education and market-ready skills. Students will now be offered a dual advantage—gaining theoretical knowledge while also acquiring practical, job-oriented training.

"This shift in curriculum is meant to offer students employment-oriented higher education, equipping them with skills in demand across various industries," an MU official stated.

📘 Structure of the Program: Skill + Academics

The programs will be integrated with vocational training modules and will include credit-based internships. Students will be required to dedicate 50% of their coursework to skill development, while the remaining 50% will focus on traditional academic subjects.

Key features include:

  • Four-year UG programs with flexible exits
  • Integrated internships and project work
  • Collaboration with industries for skill certification
  • Emphasis on digital skills, entrepreneurship, and innovation
MU officials confirmed that groundwork laid to begin offering these revamped programs from the 2025-26 academic year onwards. The shift is expected to mark a significant overhaul of the traditional undergraduate education structure.

Additionally, universities are encouraged to offer a new model combining academics and hands-on industry experience. Under this, students will spend two years on campus and two years apprenticing with industry partners. “For instance, a BA Journalism student will study theory for two years and work in a media house for the next two, with the industry also involved in their evaluation,” Kumar explained. He emphasised that such students will have an edge over others when they enter the job market. “They will already have an understanding of the industry with their experience of two years,” he said.

🧑‍🎓 Targeted Outcomes: Industry-Ready Graduates

The initiative is expected to significantly improve employment prospects for students, especially those pursuing general undergraduate degrees. Upon completion, students will not only earn a degree but will also receive industry-recognized certifications in specific skill areas.

The new curriculum also allows students to earn while they learn, giving them early exposure to professional environments and real-world projects.

📣 A Step Forward in Educational Reform

This announcement positions Mumbai University among the front-runners in implementing job-oriented education reforms in line with the NEP’s vision. By making internships and hands-on training a core component of undergraduate study, MU aims to produce a future-ready workforce with both academic qualifications and practical expertise.

Mumbai University’s skill-integrated UG programs are a transformative step toward preparing students for the competitive job market. As India’s higher education system evolves, such initiatives are critical to ensuring that degrees also translate into careers.
