University of Allahabad Implements NEP 2020: 4-Year UG Honours with Research Degree Programme Begins from 2025-26
Prayagraj, 22 July 2025: In a landmark decision, the Academic Council of the University of Allahabad has approved the full implementation of the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 across all undergraduate courses. The meeting was chaired by Vice Chancellor Prof. Sangita Srivastava and held at the Senate Hall Complex.
With this move, the university will roll out a 4-Year Undergraduate Honours Degree Programme from the academic session 2025–26, featuring an 8-semester structure and multiple entry-exit options in line with NEP 2020 guidelines.
Highlights of the NEP-Based UG Programme
- Multiple Exit Options: Certificate after 1 year, Diploma after 2 years, Degree after 3 years, and Honours with Research after 4 years.
- Credit System: Each semester will have 20 credits, totaling 160 credits over four years.
- Major-Minor Structure: Students will study two major subjects and one minor. The minor will be discontinued after the 4th semester, and one major subject will be pursued as honours in the 4th year.
- Focus on Holistic Development: Courses are designed to enhance both academic knowledge and employability skills through interdisciplinary and skill-based learning.
Integrated NEP Journey of the University
The University of Allahabad has already been implementing NEP 2020 through several integrated programmes such as:
- 5-Year BA-LLB
- 5-Year B.Tech-M.Tech (Computer Science)
- 4-Year BFA (Fine Arts)
- 5-Year UG-PG in Commerce
- 5-Year UG-PG in Family & Community Science
- 4-Year BPA (Performing Arts)
Now, in the second phase, NEP 2020 will cover all UG programmes across Arts, Science, Commerce and other faculties.
New Age Electives and Skill-Based Courses
Students will be able to choose from over 150 new 2-credit elective courses aimed at building diverse skills and creative abilities:
- Sports & Tech: Cricket, Badminton, Hockey, Sports Analytics using AI, Microsoft Tools.
- Culinary & Craft: Baking, Embroidery, South Indian and Chinese cooking, Fabric Painting.
- Music & Arts: Sitar, Tabla, Guitar, Folk Music.
- Indian Knowledge Systems: Dharma Shastra, 16 Samskaras, Upanishads, Kathopanishad.
- Soft Skills: Creative Writing, Poetry Recitation, Public Speaking, Personality Development.
- Culture & Heritage: Indian Culture, Historical Icons, National Thought Leaders.
Each of these electives will follow continuous assessment, have limited seats (20 per course), and will charge a nominal fee. Students may also pursue similar electives via NPTEL, SWAYAM, or other government-recognized platforms.
Infrastructure & Institutional Support
Under the leadership of Prof. Sangita Srivastava, the university has modernized its sports infrastructure and established two advanced language labs for modern Indian and foreign language training. New practical courses in fine arts, fashion designing, and performing arts are also being offered to NEP students.
