UGC Issues Directive to Universities for Immediate Curriculum Revision under NEP 2020 Framework
New Delhi, April 29, 2025:
In a significant move aimed at aligning higher education with the evolving demands of the 21st century, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a directive to all universities and their affiliated colleges to prioritize and implement comprehensive curriculum revisions. The instruction is in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes a holistic, flexible, and multidisciplinary approach to education.
Focus on Holistic and Practical Learning
The circular, issued by UGC Secretary Prof. Manish R. Joshi under D.O. No. 9-2/2025(CPP-II)(C.161349), highlights the need for educational institutions to adapt to rapid technological advancements and conceptual innovations. The UGC underscores the importance of moving away from rote learning towards conceptual understanding, critical thinking, creativity, and hands-on learning.
“The revised curriculum must aim to reduce the content burden, incorporate essential life skills, and promote experiential learning,” the directive states.
Regular and Thoughtful Revision Encouraged
Recognizing the rapidly changing educational landscape, the UGC emphasized that one of the most effective ways to keep academic content relevant and impactful is through regular and thoughtful revision. Universities have been urged to ensure that curricula are up-to-date and responsive to the needs of students and society at large.
Immediate Steps Mandated
The UGC has asked universities to take immediate action to thoroughly review, revise, and prepare all academic programmes for prompt implementation. The directive applies to both university departments and their affiliated colleges.
Key documents and frameworks to be considered during the revision process include:
- National Credit Framework
- National Higher Education Qualification Framework
- Curriculum and Credit Framework for Undergraduate Programmes
- Embedding Skilling in Academics through Short-term Skill Modules
- Apprenticeship Embedded Degree Programmes
- Internship Frameworks
- Curriculum and Credit Framework for Postgraduate Programmes
Call for Proactive Involvement
The responsibility of this transformation lies with educational leaders, faculty members, academic administrators, and stakeholders. The UGC has appealed for collaborative and proactive engagement to ensure successful curriculum reform aligned with NEP 2020 goals.
