In a landmark move blending philanthropy with justice, some of India’s top industrialists have come together to fund a ₹50 crore health insurance scheme exclusively for Supreme Court lawyers. The initiative, unveiled during the 75th anniversary celebrations of the Supreme Court of India, marks a historic first in lawyer welfare—powered directly by the nation’s corporate titans.

Big Industry, Bigger Heart

Spearheaded by Kapil Sibal, President of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), the initiative has received support from top business names:

  • Vedanta Group
  • Anil Ambani
  • Gautam Adani
  • Kumar Mangalam Birla
  • Lakshmi Mittal
  • Dhirubhai Ambani Family
  • Torrent Group

Each contributed between ₹5 to ₹10 crores, with the Ambani family topping the list at ₹10 crores. The heartfelt support was the result of Sibal’s personal outreach, underscoring the collective commitment to the nation’s legal fraternity.

What the Insurance Scheme Offers

Implemented in collaboration with United India Insurance, the cashless group health policy covers thousands of SCBA members and their families—completely free of cost. Key benefits include:

  • ₹2 lakh annual coverage per family
  • Inclusion of parents and in-laws
  • Coverage of pre-existing diseases from Day 1
  • Access to over 15,000 hospitals across India
  • ₹50,000 maternity benefit (normal and cesarean)
  • Coverage for congenital conditions, LASIK, ambulance charges

“This isn’t just a policy—it’s a lifeline… we see young lawyers coming to the court with dreams, but no safety net. This is our way of saying—we’ve got your back,” said Kapil Sibal to a thunderous applause.

Celebrating 75 Years: ‘Pillars of Justice’ Released

In addition to announcing the scheme, the SCBA launched a special commemorative book titled "Pillars of Justice", a collection of essays on landmark judgments of the Supreme Court. It aims to inspire young legal minds to think, critique, and evolve.

Contributors to the book include:

Gautam Bhatia, Rohit Sharma, Jhanvi Sindhu, Vikramaditya Narayan, Astha Sharma, Amit Anand Tiwari, Tanvi Anand, Rahul Narayan, Mohammad Nizamuddin Pasha, Talha Abdul Rahman, Jayant Mohan, Shreyas U Lalit, Manisha Singh, and George Pothan.

A Milestone in Legal Welfare

This initiative reflects a promising trend where corporate social responsibility (CSR) merges with judicial empowerment. As India celebrates 75 years of its apex court, the welfare of its advocates is finally receiving the institutional care it deserves.
