Supreme Court Bar Association Calls for More Women Representation in Future Appointments of Judges
In a resolution dated 30 August 2025, the SCBA urged the Chief Justice of India and the Collegium to ensure gender balance, noting that only 103 women serve as High Court Judges and just one woman is on the Supreme Court Bench.
The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has passed a resolution expressing serious concern over the lack of women Judges in the higher judiciary.
According to the resolution, out of nearly 1100 sanctioned posts for High Court Judges, about 670 are occupied by men, while only 103 are held by women. Alarmingly, several High Courts—including Uttarakhand, Tripura, Meghalaya, and Manipur—do not have even a single woman Judge.
The SCBA also noted that since 2021 no woman Judge has been elevated to the Supreme Court, and currently there is only one woman Judge serving on the apex court Bench. The Association described this situation as a matter of grave concern for inclusivity and diversity in the judiciary.
The resolution recalled that SCBA President Dr. Vikas Singh had earlier written to the Chief Justice of India (CJI) in May and July 2025, urging proportional representation of women in judicial appointments.
The Association emphasized that greater gender balance is crucial for fair representation, strengthening public confidence, and ensuring that the judiciary reflects the diversity of Indian society.
In its resolution, the SCBA urged the CJI and the Collegium to give urgent consideration to elevating more women Judges in the forthcoming rounds of judicial appointments to both the Supreme Court and High Courts.
