About the Department of Legal Affairs
The Department of Legal Affairs functions under the Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India and was established in 1961.
The Department provides legal advisory services to various Ministries and Departments of the Government of India and represents the Union of India before courts and tribunals in matters involving government litigation.
About the Internship
The Department of Legal Affairs conducts a Legal Internship Programme aimed at familiarising law students and graduates with the functioning of the Department.
During the internship, participants gain exposure to several areas of law and government legal work, including:
- Legal research and referencing
- Court functioning
- Drafting and legal advisory work
Interns may work on legal matters relating to:
- Constitutional Law
- Administrative Law
- Finance Law
- Infrastructure Law
- Economic Law
- Labour Law
- Conveyancing
- Arbitration
- Contract Law
Eligibility Criteria
Candidates must satisfy the following requirements:
- Indian students who have completed 2nd year of a 3-year LL.B. programme, or
- Students who have completed 3rd year of a 5-year LL.B. programme, or
- Law graduates from recognised universities or law schools.
Preference may be given to candidates who possess advanced computer skills, including knowledge of:
- MS Office
- Infographics tools
- Adobe software
Duration
The internship is conducted for a period of one month.
Internships generally begin from the first working day of every month.
Timings
The internship is full-time and physical, with working hours from:
9:00 AM to 5:30 PM
Location
Internships are offered at offices of the Department of Legal Affairs located in:
- New Delhi
- Chennai
- Mumbai
- Kolkata
- Bengaluru
Stipend
Selected interns will receive an honorarium of ₹1,000 upon successful completion of the internship.

Applicants are required to upload the necessary documents and submit a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their college or university.
However, law graduates are not required to submit an NOC.
