University of Allahabad’s Central Library Begins New Chapter of Growth and Improvement
Efforts underway to modernize and better serve students, researchers, and faculty
A Library Built for Knowledge and Research
The Central Library of the University of Allahabad is now moving ahead on the path of improvement and modernization. From the beginning, the library was established to meet the needs of students, research scholars, and teachers. It plays an important role not only in supporting classroom teaching but also in providing valuable resources for research work in various fields.
Historic Journey: From Muir Central College to the University Library
The library has a rich and proud history. It started as part of the Muir Central College Library in 1872. Muir College was affiliated with the University of Allahabad from 1872 to 1922. In 1922, when the university started functioning as a full teaching university, the Muir College Library became part of the university system.
The foundation stone for a new library building was laid by Sir John Hewett on 17th January 1910. The University Library officially started its operations in 1916.
Reform and Modernization Suggested by Dr. S.R. Ranganathan
In 1946-47, Dr. S.R. Ranganathan, known as the father of library science in India, was invited by the university to suggest improvements for the library. He submitted a detailed development plan in March 1947, which was later published by the university.
His plan focused on many areas such as building a new library structure, improving manpower, financial support, and other important services. A special committee was formed to review this plan.
Need for a New Building Recognized
The committee found that the existing library building, constructed between 1913–1916, was too small and not suitable for modern library needs. They recommended that a new building should be built according to modern library standards.
They also advised converting Darbhanga Hall into a large reading room for undergraduate students, with space for 250 students on the ground floor and 250 on the first floor. In addition, they proposed making private reading cubicles for research scholars and serious students.
A New Home for the Library
Later, it was found that Darbhanga Hall was not large enough to store books and provide complete library services. As a result, a new and more spacious library building was constructed in 1973. This building had enough space and the possibility for future expansion as well.
The old library building is now used for administrative purposes and houses the offices of the Registrar, Accounts, and General Section of the university.
Looking Ahead
Today, as the Central Library continues its journey toward growth and development, it carries forward the legacy of knowledge and service. The University of Allahabad is committed to upgrading the library infrastructure, resources, and services to ensure it remains a hub of learning and research for generations to come.
