UGC Urges HEIs to Participate in CCTV Surveillance Security & Forensics Hackathon 2.0

A National Initiative by the Ministry of Home Affairs to Strengthen Surveillance Innovation

New Delhi, June 27, 2025
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has officially invited all Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) across India to actively participate in the CCTV Surveillance Security & Forensics Hackathon 2.0, a national-level initiative spearheaded by the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India.

The announcement follows a formal communication from BPR&D (letter no. M-13014/1/2024-AD (Admin)-HQ BPRD-Part-1 dated 20th June 2025), regarding the launch of this hackathon designed to foster the development of cutting-edge surveillance technologies and forensic tools tailored to the operational and investigative needs of Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) across the nation.

Purpose and Scope of the Hackathon

The CCTV Surveillance Security & Forensics Hackathon 2.0 aims to promote indigenous, secure, scalable, and cost-effective CCTV-based solutions that can support the nation's internal security frameworks. This national challenge is open to:

  • Students from academic institutions
  • Faculty members and researchers
  • Startups and R&D organizations working in surveillance and forensic technologies

The hackathon is envisioned as a platform to crowdsource innovative solutions that can be integrated into police and investigative operations, improving real-time monitoring, facial recognition, incident tracking, and forensic evidence processing.
