New Delhi, May 2025 – The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India's apex human rights institution, has announced its much-anticipated Summer Internship Programme (SIP) 2025. Scheduled from 16th June to 11th July 2025, this 30-day internship offers university students across the country a unique platform to understand, engage with, and contribute to the protection and promotion of human rights.
The internship is designed in line with Section 12(h) of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, which mandates the NHRC to promote human rights literacy and awareness. Since its inception in 1998, the NHRC Summer Internship Programme has empowered thousands of students with knowledge and insights on human rights issues through lectures, field visits, research projects, and interactive sessions.
About NHRC
The National Human Rights Commission of India was established as a statutory public body on 12 October 1993 under the Protection of Human Rights Ordinance issued on 28 September 1993. It was later granted full statutory status through the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993. The NHRC plays a crucial role in investigating violations of human rights, spreading awareness, advising governments, and engaging with national and international human rights mechanisms.

Eligibility Criteria
Applications are invited from students across various disciplines. Eligible candidates include:
- 2nd or 3rd year students of 3-year LLB courses
- 4th or 5th year students of 5-year integrated law courses (BA LLB, BBA LLB, etc.)
- Final year students pursuing PG Diploma/MA in Human Rights
- Final-year Postgraduate students in Political Science, Sociology, MSW, Criminology, Public Administration, Rural Development, History, Economics, Commerce, Anthropology, Mass Communication, International Relations, and other Social Sciences
Structure of the Internship
The SIP 2025 is a comprehensive academic and field exposure programme, featuring:
- 70-75 sessions by NHRC officials, academics, and human rights defenders
- Interaction with NHRC Chairperson and Members
- Group Research Projects on current human rights issues
- Book Review assignments and presentations
- Human Rights film screenings followed by discussions
- Field visits to police stations, prisons, NGOs, Parliament, and statutory commissions like NCW, NCPCR, NCSC, NCM, NGT, NLSA, and the Supreme Court of India
Stipend and Support
- Each selected intern will receive a stipend of Rs. 12,000
- Second-class train fare (to and from Delhi) will be reimbursed for outstation students
- Certificate of Participation will be awarded based on attendance, discipline, and timely submission of projects
Awards and Incentives
- Group Research Project Prizes:
- 1st Prize: Rs. 15,000
- 2nd Prize: Rs. 10,000
- 3rd Prize: Rs. 5,000
- Book prizes (up to Rs. 1,000 each) for top performers in:
- Book Review (Top 5 Interns)
- Declamation Contest (Top 3 Interns)

- Mark sheets of 10th, 12th, all semesters of Graduation and current course
- Recommendation letter from HOD/Dean/Principal in the given format (dated after the release of the internship notice)
- A well-written Statement of Purpose (SOP)

- Incomplete applications or missing documents will lead to rejection
