NHRC Summer Internship Programme 2025: Applications Invited for Prestigious Human Rights Internship
New Delhi, May 11, 2025 — The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has officially announced the launch of its much-anticipated Summer Internship Programme (SIP) 2025, inviting applications from eligible students across the country. The programme is scheduled to take place from 16th June 2025 (Monday) to 11th July 2025 (Friday) at NHRC, New Delhi.
About NHRC and Its Role
Established on 12 October 1993, the NHRC is a statutory public body formed under the Protection of Human Rights Ordinance, 1993, which was later replaced by the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993. The Commission has been entrusted with a wide range of responsibilities including the promotion and protection of human rights in India.
In accordance with Section 12(h) of the Protection of Human Rights Act, the Commission is empowered to promote human rights literacy and awareness, a mission it has continued to uphold through various educational initiatives including internships.
Background of the Internship Programme
The NHRC has been conducting Summer and Winter Internship Programmes since 1998 and 2000, respectively. These initiatives aim to sensitize university students about the critical need for the protection and promotion of human rights in contemporary society. The SIP 2025 continues this legacy by offering a comprehensive 30-day learning and training opportunity.
Eligibility Criteria
The internship is open to students from across India who meet the following academic qualifications:
- LLB (3-year course): Students who have completed the 1st year and are now pursuing 2nd or 3rd year.
- BA LLB (5-year integrated course): Students who have completed 3 years (or Semester VI) and are pursuing 4th or 5th year.
- Postgraduate (PG) students: Those pursuing PG Diploma/MA in Human Rights, or PG in Political Science, Sociology, Social Work (MSW), Criminology, Public Administration, Rural Development, History, Economics, Commerce, Anthropology, Mass Communication, International Relations, or any discipline in Social Sciences, with a preference given to final-year students.
Internship Structure and Activities
The SIP 2025 promises an intensive educational experience covering 70-75 sessions that include:
- Classroom sessions on varied human rights topics
- Interaction with the Hon’ble Chairperson and Members of NHRC
- Research projects on pressing human rights issues
- Book reviews
- Film screenings and discussions on themes such as child labour, anti-trafficking, rights of the elderly, education and health rights
- Field visits to:
- Police Stations and Jails
- NGOs
- Parliament
- National Commissions (Women, Minorities, SC/ST)
- National Green Tribunal
- National Legal Services Authority
- National Commission for Protection of Child Rights
- Supreme Court of India
Stipend and Financial Support
- A stipend of Rs. 12,000/- will be paid to all selected interns upon completion.
- Interns from outside Delhi will be reimbursed ordinary second-class train fare (to and fro) via the shortest route to New Delhi.
Awards and Recognition
Interns demonstrating outstanding performance during SIP 2025 will be eligible for multiple awards:
- Group Research Project Awards:
- 1st Prize – Rs. 15,000/-
- 2nd Prize – Rs. 10,000/-
- 3rd Prize – Rs. 5,000/-
- Book Review Awards: Top five performers will receive books worth up to Rs. 1,000/- each.
- Declamation Contest Awards: Top three speakers will also be awarded books worth up to Rs. 1,000/- each.
- Certificate of Participation will be awarded based on attendance, punctuality, discipline, participation, and timely submission of project assignments.
